Our series on Administrative Divisions takes us to Uzbekistan, a republic that was formed from the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Uzbekistan is populated by people of Turkic origins. While the majority is composed of ethnic Uzbeks, there are also other Turkic minorities (Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Karakalpaks) and non Turkic minorities (Russians, Tajiks).
Uzbekistan is a unitary republic and its first level subdivisions are 12 regions and one independent city (Tashkent, the country's capital). To the East of the country lies the Republic of Karakalpakstan, home to an ethnic minority whose autonomous status was already recognized in Soviet times.
