Our Series on Remote Islands takes us to three tiny islands in the Western Pacific Region: Tikopia, Anuta and Fatutaka are volcanic islands that lie about 120 nautical miles from the Santa Cruz Islands. Like the Santa Cruz, these islands are under the sovereignty of the Solomon Islands, however they are not geographically part of the Solomon Archipelago, and their population is not of Melanesian origin like populations on the rest of the Solomon Islands.
Tikopia and Anuta are known as "Polynesian outliers", that is, societies of Polynesian ancestry and culture that are far from the core Polynesian cultural region. Tikopia is home to close to 2000 people, while Anuta is home to about 300. Fatutaka, the smallest of all three, does not have any permanent population.
