Our What's in a Name Series takes us to the later period of the Roman Empire, when it was divided into more than 120 provinces, grouped into 12 dioceses.
It is fascinating to notice that there is a province called Europa, on the Western shore of the Bosporus. Another one is called Asia and it is located in Anatolia. A third one is named Africa and it is located in today's Tunisia. Those three names, often used in opposition to the others, were later adopted to qualify entire continents. Quite a destiny for three small provinces that ended up as denominations for lands that comprise over 80% of humankind!
