The Reconquista

The Reconquista

The medieval history of the Iberian peninsula is one of conflict between its Christian and Muslim rulers, from the early Saracen conquest of the 8th Century to the final surrender of the Emirate of Granada in 1492. This gradated map shows the slow but steady push towards the South of the Christian Kingdoms (Aragon, Navarra, Castilla-Leon and Portugal) until their complete control of the peninsula in the late fifteenth Century. Castilla would soon absorb both Navarra and Aragon to form the Kingdom of Spain, while Portugal remains an independent nation to this day.

Both Spain and Portugal would maintain their spirit of conquest and come to dominate vast areas of the World, particularly in the Americas and the Far East.
