Our Series "The World Today" takes us to the Indian Ocean, the World's third largest ocean. The Indian Ocean is home to many isolated islands and island groups, and encompasses both atoll formations and volcanic islands.
There are two large island nations: Madagascar, off the shores of southeastern Africa, and Sri Lanka, at the southern tip of the South Asian Peninsula. Four other island nations comprise much smaller landmass: Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Maldives, and the Comoros. There are also a number of French (Mayotte, Reunion, and Scattered Islands) and British (the British Indian Ocean Territory) Territories.
Off this map, further South are the Amsterdam and St Paul Group, the Kerguelen Islands and the Crozet Islands, all French possessions, and further East are Christmas and the Keelings, tiny Australian territories. On the Northern edge of the map are the Socotra Islands, in the Arabian Sea, which belong to Yemen.
