The Arctic is one of the most strategic regions in the World. As of today, 8 nations have territories north of the Arctic Circle: The USA, Canada, Denmark (through Greenland), Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
Global warming will open new routes between Asia and the Atlantic Regions of Europe and North America. The most likely route will be following the shores of North America through the notorious Northwest Passage. As the narrowest straits are surrounded by Canadian lands, Canada claims that the passage is within its territorial waters, but both the United States and Russia consider it to be an international strait.
