St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks

St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks

Our series on Remote Islands takes us to the middle Atlantic. About 500 nautical miles from the Northeast corner of South America lies a tiny group of rocks called the St Peter and St Paul Rocks - Penedos de São Pedro e São Paulo in Portuguese.

These rocks barely reach the surface of the ocean, with a combined land surface of 1.5 hectare for 15 separate rocks. They were discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th Century, and are part of Brazil, the nearest country. Since 1998, the Brazilian army maintains a permanent presence with a scientific base that hosts 4 personnel at all time.
