Our Series on Administrative Divisions takes us to Norway, in Northern Europe.
Since the unification of small kingdoms took place in the eleventh century, Norway's subdivisions were marked by its geography, an elongated coastal strip in a highly mountainous region. While those subdivisions went through a variety of names, the post-WWI reorganization created Fylke, typically translated as Counties.
There were 19 counties in Norway until the latest reorganization took place in 2017. Several mergers occurred to reduce the number of counties to 11. This 2022 map shows the new county structure with the older borders between merged counties.
