Mexico in 2022

This map shows Mexico, officially the United Mexican States (Estados Unidos Mexicanos), as it is in 2022.

Mexico was created in 1821 by secession from the Spanish colonial empire and, after much turmoil and back-and-forth between republican and imperial regimes, became a federal republic in 1867. By then, it had 23 states, but that number grew over time, and as of 2022, Mexico has 31 states plus the City of Mexico, which was known as the Federal District until 2016 but is now an independent municipality.
