Our Series on artificial features takes us to the Manicouagan Reservoir, an artificial lake located in the province of Quebec, in Eastern Canada. The reservoir is part of a vast hydro-electric project and was completed in the 1960s.
Manicouagan is interesting in several ways. It is one of the largest artificial lakes in the World. It is also circular in shape and contains an island that covers the majority of the lake itself. That island is the second largest lake island in the World. Finally, its distinctive symmetrical nature shows that the lake occupies a meteorite's impact crater. This is also one of the largest of its kind, and it is about 200M years old.
