The Korean Peninsula is one of the most dangerous regions in the World, with two states that have been officially at war since the 1950s. South Korea is the most populous and richest of the two states. It has been in a military alliance with the United States since the Korean War (1950-1953). North Korea is in contrast a poor and isolated state, led by members of a single family for over 70 years. It is allied with China and has the most formidable army in the World in comparison to its GDP. As Seoul, the capital and largest city in South Korea is less than 100km from the border, the capacity of deterrence of the North has been responsible for an armed status quo to this day.
