Our "Remote Islands" Series takes us to the Sea of Okhotsk, a border sea of the North Pacific Ocean, surrounded by the Asian landmass, the Kamchatka Peninsula, Sakhalin and Hokkaido. The Kuriles mark the passage toward the Pacific.
Interestingly, only one island can be found far from the shores. Its name is Iony in Russian, it is a small rocky island and it is under Russian sovereignty. Older maps in English call it St. Jonah Island. It has no permanent population.
As usual for these outlying islands, Iony Island is a magnificent tiny ecosystem of birds and sea mammals. While mostly untouched by human presence, it has become a destination for cruises in recent years.
