Haiti is a nation located on the Western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic.
Haiti is the second oldest nation in the Americas, after the United States of America. It became independent from France in 1804. It is also the first country born out of a slave revolt, and the first modern state whose population was in majority of African or mixed European-African heritage.
The administrative structure of modern Haiti follows that of France, with 10 départements divided into 42 arrondissements and 146 communes.
