The traditional subdivision of Greece since it became independent in the 1800s was the prefecture, a local unit that was itself subdivided into municipalities. Since the 1980s, a major reorganization led to the creation of regions, an intermediary level between the central state and the prefectures. These regions saw their field of intervention grow over time, taking over some authority from both the central government and the prefectures. The latter were finally abolished in 2010 and replaced by smaller regional units with limited administrative powers.
As of 2022, there are 13 regions, 74 regional units and 332 municipalities.
