As of 2022, Eastern Asia is composed of four continental countries (China, Mongolia, North and South Korea) plus the island country of Japan. The easternmost territories of Russia are also in the region, and there are two autonomous regions of the People's Republic of China: Hong Kong and Macau. Finally, the island territory of Taiwan is a disputed territory. As a refuge to the Chinese nationalist government in 1949, the territory became the sole diplomatic representative of China until the UN and most of the World's countries recognized the People's Republic. Since then, the status of Taiwan has been unclear, neither independent nor administratively part of the PRC. Thisa is a source of considerable tension in the region.
