Cocos Island

Our Remote Islands Series takes us Cocos Island, Isla del Coco in Spanish, a small island located in the Eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. It is located 400nm northwest from the Galapagos and 300nm from the shores of Central America. It is under the sovereignty of Costa Rica.

Cocos Island was discovered by Spanish sailors in the sixteenth Century. It was annexed by Cost Rica in 1832. Its permanent population is limited to the few dozen rangers that administer Cocos Island National Park.
