The current administrative divisions of Chile are based on three levels: regions, provinces and communes. The thirteen original regions were created in 1974, and three new regions were added in 2006 and 2017. Regions were originally given names as well as roman numerals, though the numbers are not official anymore.
Provinces are much older, having been in existence since the colonial times. While there were 8 provinces at independence time, there are now 56 of them.
