Our series on Federations takes us to Argentina, a federal republic that gained independence from Spain in a war that lasted from 1810 to 1818.
The early history of the Republic was troubled, with several secessions happening and numerous regime changes. By 1836, there were 14 provinces with their own government, as well as many territories for newly acquired lands, which all became provinces in time. The last territory to access provincial status is Tierra del Fuego, in the far south, in 1990. There are, as of 2022, 23 provinces in Argentina.
The Capital, Buenos Aires, has been an autonomous City since 1880. The province that surrounds it, also called Buenos Aires, is by far the most populous of all provinces.
